Castiadas
The VillaggioCarovana holiday home is in Castiadas, on the southeastern coast of Sardinia: over 20 km of coastline between Villasimius and Costa Rei
Castiadas is a relatively young village: it acquired autonomy in 1985. Its history is both interesting and unique. Despite numerous findings that trace the early inhabitants as far back as the Neolitic (nuraghi, domus de janas, menhir) and all the way to the middle ages, for nearly four centuries the land remained uninhabited because of its malaria infested marshes.
In 1875 the first convicts arrived in Castiadas to populate what was to become the largest Farming Penal Colony in
It took almost 80 years of penal labour to reclaim the land and make it productive. The colony was shut down in 1956 and today it is a Museum open to the general public for viewing as well as hosting many cultural events. At this stage a new era of agricultural development unfolded, as the reclaimed land was offered to Sardinian farmers and to the Italians expelled from newly independent
VillaggioCarovana and Castiadas Ospitale are working to ensure that its course remains in harmony with nature and that our children will be able to enjoy it as much as we do.
